our little garden

Dear Little Garden,

Oh, you poor neglected thing! We had such high hopes for you!

A few things led to your lack of success...

We were late in planting (late June, not so good)
We left a few spots empty with the hopes of putting in some tomato + strawberry starts...never happened
We have a pesky squirrel who lives in our yard + literally ate almost all of our seeds!
I keep on forgetting to water what little has survived...

But our zucchini! Despite my neglect, it has managed to not only survive, but thrive! (I hear this is very common for zucchini- is that true?) It looks very sad and lonely out there in our raised bed all by itself, but I am grateful that at least something from our little experiment made it. I can't wait to use it in one of my very favorite muffin recipes later this week!

And next year little garden? Watch out...I have plans. Beginning with planting in late May and some kind of chicken-wire contraption in order to keep our squirrel (who needs a name...) out.

It is going to be awesome.

  1. When all else fails, grow zucchini! My garden is pathetic as well, much for the same reasons as you. Though I didn't grow zukes, due to lack of space, my carrots and beets have done well, even with all the neglect!

  2. Zucchini--the most forgiving of garden friends!
I like the new plain header look.

  4. Have you seen "Over the Hedge"? One of my favorite movies of all time--but I'm a total sucker for smart, funny cartoons that adults and kids can enjoy. Anyhow, reading your post I immediately thought of Hammy, the squirrel from "Over the Hedge." You should name your squirrel Hammy! (Given our surname, whenever we watch that movie you have no idea how many jokes revolve around Hammy's last line: "Hey guys! I found my nuts!" LOL)

  5. Mmmm... I love zucchini! Enjoy your muffins! I've had good luck sprinkling cayenne pepper and slices of jalapeno peppers around our plants to keep the squirrels and chipmunks away. I have to repeat it every time it rains, but it works!
