on my nightstand :: the postmistress

I thought that it would be fun every now and then to share about books that I am currently reading and loving. A few thoughts and some favorite quotes...

And please share any good books you are reading in the comments!

I first saw The Postmistress by Sarah Blake at Costco and fell in love with the cover. Then I read the back and saw that it was about World War II and was super intrigued (side note: I have a slight obsession with books about World War II- ever since 5th grade when I read Number the Stars). When I saw it at the library a few weeks later, I decided it was time to read it, and I am so glad I did! Besides being about a part of history that I am fascinated with, it is such a beautifully written book; I didn't want it to end.

Here are a couple of my favorite quotes...

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
"...Under the silent morning sky, she imagined she could pull Time like taffy, stretching it longer and longer between her hands until the finest point had been reached, the point just before breaking, and she could live there. A point at the center of time with no going forward, no looking back."

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
 "Some stories don't get told. Some stories you hold on to. To stand and watch and hold it in your arms was not cowardice."

  1. So is it historical fiction or based on a true story? If you like historical fiction set during world war II you might enjoy the bronze horseman...it's a love story too which may or may not be your scene ;) I kind of fell in love with the book as I got deeper and deeper into it and it's set in Russia which I'm not very familiar with.

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. Jenny, that sounds really good.
    Andi, your book sounds really awesome too. Thanks for sharing.
    I am currently halfway through a book by Francis Chan called "Crazy Love". Francis was the pastor of a very large church in CA who recently stepped down for reasons that are explained in his book, and on his website. The book is about loving God, what it takes to "really" love God, what it isn't, and the fruit of someone in love with the Father through his son, Jesus Christ. I must say, my spirit has not been the same...you won't be the same if you read it. Very challenging to all who call themselves Christians.

  4. What a gorgeous cover--I'd have totally been sucked in by the cover alone! (That's also a problem I have with wines....I usually pick based on the label, and that doesn't always work out so well.) Thanks for sharing!

  6. Oh, I have this out from the library right now! I highly-super-highly recommend Little Bee by Chris Cleave. So so good. Then I checked out his first book from the library, Incendiary, which I still can't decide if it was better. They were both so good! I also just read Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother since there was so much hype about it. It was a really good cultural insight, and I surprisingly enjoyed reading it. Love you Andi!

  7. Jenny, it is historical fiction. I will have to check out The Bronze Horseman! Also, I have been meaning to email you about Bittersweet- so crazy that we were reading it at the very same time! Isn't it such an amazing book? I loved it so much.

    Brianne, I think I saw that book at the library recently and almost got it! I will have to go back :)

    Shawn, that is so so funny- I just started Little Bee right after I finished The Postmistress! My book club is doing it this month + I LOVE it so far! Oh, I miss you so much, dear friend. Love you!
